1. Elevate the head of the bed (do not use additional pillows). Put blocks under the headboard or put a wedge under the mattress.
  2. Do not eat or drink anything at least 2 hours before bedtime.
  3. Avoid coffee, tea, caffeinated soda and alcohol.
  4. Avoid spicy, acidic and high fat foods.
  5. Do not smoke.
  6. Reduce weight, if necessary.
  7. Use non-prescription antacids (Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, etc) to relieve mild reflux symptoms.
  8. Use non-prescription histamine blockers (Zantac, Tagamet, Pepcid, Axid) for more persistent reflux symptoms.
  9. Use prescription anti-reflux medications if prescribed by a physician.
  10. Contact a physician if reflux symptoms persist despite medications or become chronic. A more serious condition may be present.
